my first trip to the asian market

if you did not know, i am korean. i was adopted and have lived in the united states most of my life. so i do not know any of the korean language or much of the culture.

in addition, i am not very adventurous in my eating. i do not like seafood or hot/spicy foods. when i go the korean restaurant, i order chicken and fried rice. i also order kimbaps. DELICIOUS! you know it's delicious if i used capital letters in the post.

my daughter also loves kimbaps. she enjoys them so much she wanted to have a kimbap party for her 5 year party. i am in the midst of planning it now. so that's how it came about that we would make my first trip to the asian market.

my mother often has international students living for short periods of time in her house. so she often makes trips to the asian market. she said she would take me and show me around. we went to the "asian" district. i didn't know there was an "asian district".
i had been told about the possible strong fish smell - great - don't like seafood so this will be an adventure. i also heard there could be meat hanging. wonderful. i wasn't allowed to take a camera into the store so this is all you get. a picture of the entrance into the store.
i was very intrigued. there was all kinds of interesting things. their produce section was huge with all different kinds of roots, fruit and vegetables i had never seen or heard of before. i did see some huge bugs that must have been sweet or something because they were in the candy aisle. i realized my palate is not that diverse. my kids were going kind of crazy in there. i think it was from the left over sugar from last night . i ended up buying some rice crackers for my daughter's party. i also bought some little dishes for the party too. i would like to go back sans kids so i can really look at everything. my kids loved the live catfish and crabs.

after shopping, my mother treated us to lunch at cafe oasis. it was right next door to the supermarket. they had all kinds of specialty juices, teas, coffees, milkshakes, and smoothies you could order. the kids got a grape juice and a peppermint juice with jello at the bottom of their drinks. my mother ordered a mango juice and i got a vanilla iced coffee. not that adventurous i know. i was going to order the tapioca for the bottom of my drink but they didn't have any made.

my son didn't like his peppermint juice, so grandma was sweet enough to trade her mango juice with him. i didn't know he liked mango flavor. they loved the jello at the bottom of the drinks and the huge straws. i loved the huge straws!

we ordered sesame chicken, fried rice, egg soup, and edamame (sp?)- soy beans. my daughter loved the beans. she wolfed them down!

it was a great afternoon. thank you for taking us mom!!! i love you!

I like edamame. Ginger had it as an appetizer last year in Austin for thanksgiving. We dipped them in salt and soy sauce! Yummy! Glad you had fun down there!

I'm still curious about these kimbobs things....I've tried sushi (not with raw fish, but the cucumber and I just don't like the seaweed....)
