Catch Him If You Can

It's been an eventful morning on the Treasure's island.  I took both the children in for their well-child annual doctor appointment.  My son had not been looking forward to this visit because he knew he was going to get two immunization shots.

We arrived early, as we usually do, to do paperwork.  The nurse called us back to the small room and took the kids' vitals.  Our wonderful pediatrician, Dr. B, came in did part of their exam.  She was called out of the room, so the nurse came in with my son's immunization shots.  My daughter didn't want to watch so she stepped out of the room.

My son had to have a shot in each arm.  As the nurse was getting things prepared, my son had hopped on the bed.  I could tell he was very nervous because he was breathing heavily and pretty quiet.  Not laughing and chatting like we were just a minute before.  The nurse laid everything out beside him and started to prepare his arm.  She rubbed it with an alcohol wipe and told him to relax his arm.  Then she told him to relax his arm and look away, again, and then again.  I'm not even sure he was breathing regularly.  She pinched his arm and gave him shot.  She asked him how it was.  He said, "Well, it just felt like pressure.  Well, actually I feel light-headed."  Then his face went pale and he slumped forward.  He had passed out on the nurse.  Fortunately, she was standing right in front of him.  She held him for a minute and tried to talk to him to see if he would wake up.  He didn't wake up, so she laid him down onto the bed.

While I had gotten up walked over to them, I was laughing because I couldn't believe he had passed out.  My laughing turned to crying when the nurse laid him down onto the bed because his body went  rigid.  His left arm was stiff against his chest, his right arm straight out and his legs both pointed straight out.  His body started to move like he was having a seizure.  As soon as that started, the nurse ran out of the room to find the doctor.  I don't think she was gone more than 30 seconds, but it was a long 30 seconds.  My son's body shook a bit more then stopped.  When he opened his eyes, his face was flushed and sweaty.  He was agitated and asking what happened.  He had no idea what happened and was wondering why I was standing over him.  The nurse and the doctor came back in the room and I told the doctor everything that happened.  Dr. B asked my son a series of questions to make sure he was alert and aware of his surroundings. The doctor didn't seem to think it was a seizure because he was fully alert and oriented just minutes after it had all happened.

I think he had just been so nervous about getting the shots he had stopped breathing and that's why he passed out.  The doctor had my son lay down for a while and then sit up and later stand up to make sure he wasn't light-headed anymore.  My daughter came back into the room.  Truthfully, I had forgotten she was out there in all the commotion.  When I saw her face, I could tell she was upset, confused and scared.  She broke down crying.  I'm pretty sure I started crying again too.  The doctor continued the rest of the well-child exam on both of the kids.  Everything else with the exam was fine.  My son still had to get his last immunization.  He did fine, no problems at all.

There doesn't seem to be any other side effects besides a sore arm and a little tiredness.  He's back to his usual wise-cracking, quick-witted self.  Thank the Lord.  Now I just need to remember about possibility of him fainting whenever he gets shots in the future and we're all good.

"Reading", Cheesecake, and Froggies

This has been a busy week. We went swimming at a friend's house.  So thankful for friends who are so generous to invite us to swim.  Anywho, after a couple of hours of swimming we headed home.  I told the kids they would have to at least read for 20 minutes.  I sat down on the couch.  My daughter grabbed her blanket and book and snuggled up beside me.  She's currently reading a Magic Tree House book.

It is just a few minutes before I hear slow, steady, heavy breathing.  I look down at my daughter to see her sleeping.  I ask her if she's reading and get a sleepy "Mmmhmmm" reply.  She is really trying to stay awake, but to no avail.

At one point she is holding her book upside down.  Then she just lays down on the couch and reads by osmosis.

Finally, we throw away all pretenses.  I think she only made it halfway through one paragraph when all was said and done.

On Monday, we went to a local waterpark, Andy Alligator's, with some friends.  This was our first time.  It had two big slides, a lazy river, and a water play area.  The kids had a blast and I liked it because it was small enough that my kids could run around by themselves.

On Tuesday, the kids and I went to my Grandma Margaret's for lunch with my sister and her family.  Then we all headed to the Jasmine Moran Children's Museum.  We've been there several times before, but it was fun to go with some smaller kids and my grandma.

I bet the picture below is a pretty good depiction of what it would be like if my kids attended a school.  :)

After the museum, we went back to my grandma's house.  All the kids ate ice cream.  I did not.  I waited for my dessert for that evening.  You may not know this, but Tuesday was National Cheesecake Day.  Is that not divine?  Cheesecake is my favorite dessert.  The Cheesecake Factory was having 1/2 priced cheesecake slices.  Several weeks ago, I invited several friends to go with me.  Of course, I didn't care who showed up.  I would have sat there all by myself eating cheesecake.  Four other friends ended up coming.

Just take a look at a portion of the cheesecake menu.  Yum!

My friends, Chantel, Kristen, and Lee came.  Lee brought her neighbor, Gina.  We all just ordered cheesecake.  Someone ordered an extra slice so we could taste it.  As we were waiting for our cheesecake, the girls were like "Let's all share our cheesecake.  We can split it into five pieces and all share."  I laughingly said, "I'm not sharing mine."  These girls laugh, but about 65% of me was serious.  I did share though.

Clockwise, starting on the left was the Hershey's Chocolate Bar Cheesecake, Tiramisu Cheesecake, Chocolate Mousse Cheesecake, Reeces Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake Cheeesecake (mine), Oreo Dream Extreme Cheesecake (the extra), and Caramel Pecan Turtle Cheesecake.  Whew.

Here's a picture of mine before I "shared".

When all was said and done, I tried two bites of the other cheesecakes, and cut half mine off to share.  I took three bites of my cheesecake and was finished.  It was so rich.  I packed it up in a box and would save it for later.

That is until I was at the store, and the officer found it in the refrigerator.  This is all that was left of it.

For clarification (for my sis, Jess), when you are married, what's yours is his unless it's cheesecake!  Then it's off limits unless permission is granted (before the eating of the cheesecake).  Yeah, I'm not really over it yet.

On Wednesday, my sister, Gina came into town.  She spent the day with us.  We met my mom at the Asian market.  We had to purchase the ingredients for kimbobs.  Gina and I were going to make them for lunch on Thursday.

Guess what I saw at the Chinese market?

Frogs.

Live Frogs.

Fatty Frogs.

For Sale.

To EAT.  $4.99/lb.  Look at them.  Ugggg....

I did not purchase any.

One of my kid's favorite things to do when we go to the Asian market is to go next store to Cafe Oasis and get drinks with jelly in them.  My son's favorite is Mango with Rainbow jelly and my daughter orders Strawberry with Rainbow jelly.

Wednesday night, Gina and I went out to eat with my other sister, Mistie.  We went to PF Changs.  Great food.  Good times with sisters.  Can't ask for a better evening.  Even if a waitress dropped her tray of dishes and a soup spoon landed in my lap.  :)

This Week On The Island

This past week has gone by quickly.  We've been busy.  For a couple of days last week, the kids went to visit their grandparents and their aunt.  They had a great time with them and the officer and I had a couple of date days.  Nice.

On Saturday, my daughter tested for her blue stripe on her green belt.  This is pretty much the way she felt during the whole test.

We got a pretty big smile when she demonstrated her front splits.

She had to demonstrate her forms, spar and break boards.

It was a long three hour test (most of it is spent waiting on the sidelines), but she did a great job and she earned her blue stripe.

The rain has been wreaking havoc on my walking routine.  I have discovered if I do not get up first thing in the morning to walk, I am tired and a bit grumpy (according to the kids and the officer).  However, the rain did provide a little entertainment.  While on a bike ride, we found a drainage ditch.  They tried to ride as far in as possible.  They got about half way, but just decided to play in the water.  I even tried to ride through it.  I didn't get as far as they did.  We all went home soaking wet.

I made pizza for dinner.  I made pepperoni pizza for the family and a veggie pizza for myself.  I used a creamy alfredo sauce, an Italian cheese blend, a zucchini, a red onion, some garlic and a Roma tomatoe.  It was so good.  This is what I will make for me from now on.  I am not sure that it was any cheaper to make than purchasing it from Papa Murphy's, but it was good.  There is a cauliflower pizza crust recipe I have on Pinterest I want to try.  Maybe soon.

Today, we went to see Charlotte's Web with some friends.  I love the summer movies local theaters show for kids at a discounted price.  My son wasn't as excited to see Charlotte's Web as he was to see Despicable Me 2, but he got over it as soon as we sat down.  Sometimes any movie seen in a theater is more fun than watching it in your living room.  After the movie, we all headed to Sonic for lunch and then we walked around the Bricktown Canal.

On our way home, we made a slight detour to Pinkitzel.  I let the kids choose a bit of candy.  There were Jelly Bellys, Cherry Sours, Gummi Bears, Gummi Jets, Mints, Lego candy, and Runts flying everywhere.

I even found this huge Gummi Bear, which gave me goose bumps, that I loved.  I didn't purchase it because 1) I don't like Gummi Bears and B) it was $32!

I even got a little gift for the officer.

The kids enjoyed some of their candy while they did their schoolwork this afternoon.

This Week on the Island....

This week was a long week of fun! On Monday, we spent the day with the officer.  I blogged about that here.  On Tuesday, my friend, Van, brought me a special surprise.  It was her first Pinterest project.  I think she did great.  Thanks Mrs. Van!

The officer had to work Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday all day.  Most nights he didn't not get home until 11:30 p.m.  I had a lot of plans for me and the kids.  On Tuesday, we went to see Despicable Me.  It was a summer  $2 movie special at the Warren Theater.  The kids love being able to go to the actual movie theater.  We arrived early.  There were a lot of people there.  The Warren was showing Despicable Me 2 for free for all the children who attended Plaza Towers (an elementary school that was affected by the May 20, 2013).

We purchased our tickets.  I also treated the kids to a large popcorn and drink.  One free refill on the large sizes.  The kids were giddy with excitement.  They thoroughly enjoyed watching Despicable Me on the "big screen".  My son would often turn to me and say, "I never noticed that when we watch it on tv."  They gobbled down the popcorn like it was candy.  We all felt sick afterward, but you gotta have feeling at least once in your life.  :)

I cannot for the life of me remember what else we did after that movie.  Probably because I was one day away from being 41.

On Wednesday, the kids and I headed back to the Warren Theater to watch Despicable Me 2.  This time we had my nieces, Abbie and Kylie joined us.  My friend, Jill, and her two kids were supposed to join us, but her youngest got sick so her oldest son was the only one who could come.  This time we did not get the large drink and popcorn.  We learned our lesson from the day before.  It was a very cute movie.

After the movie, we went swimming at my niece's neighborhood pool.  My niece Abbie was trying to teach my daughter a cheer leading lift.  She tried, and tried and tried...

and finally she got it.

The water was just a bit chilly, since the weather was in the 80s.  However, if you hung out in the water, it wasn't too bad.

On the way home I had this short conversation with my son:

Son:  When you are younger, getting older is fun!  When you are old..... (his voice trails off when I look into the rear view mirror at him)
Me:  What's that brother?  I can't hear you!
Son:  See?  Exactly!!!  When you get old, you can't hear either!  Happy Birthday Mom!

My family has had a lot of fun making fun of me getting older this week.  Especially the officer, who likes to spend the next two month emphasizing that I am four years older than him - that is until his birthday in September.

On July 4th, we went to my mom's for dinner.  My mom and Papa Bill cooked out. My Grandma Margaret came from Shawnee to eat with us.  My mom even tried a new recipe from Pinterest.  It was an onion casserole.  Five onions, sour cream, Parmesan cheese, and crumbled crackers as a topping.  She made a cake and homemade banana ice cream.  Yummy!

When my mom gave me my present, it was in a Walmart reusable tote.  Inside was a fan you can wear around your neck (to keep me cool while I'm walking), a Academy gift card (so I can get some new walking shoes), and hand held mister fan (she must know that I really don't like to be hot), and a 4 x 6 white index card with the singular word "meatloaf" on it.  Every year she makes me a couple of meatloaves.  Love them.  Since I will never make it myself, due to the raw meat squishiness, she loves me enough to make it for me.  We had it for dinner tonight!

We headed over to the local college where the city puts on a fantastic fireworks show.  We met up with other family.  The weather was just perfect!  The fireworks were great, even if they set off car alarms around us.  I don't think we got home until 11:45 p.m.  Both kids were asleep before I hit the highway.

Overall, it was a great week spent with family.  And turning 41 wasn't so bad.  Even if I left the crockpot plugged in all day yesterday without anything in and forgot to plug it in today when I had something in it.  More of these things to come in the next few years I suspect.
