i don't know why i have been procrastinating posting this blog, but i'm getting around to it now. we had my son's 7th birthday party on saturday. the theme was lego/bionicles, with more emphasis on the legos.
i made pretty simple invitations. i just purchased 12 x 12 scrapbook paper when it was 1/2 off at hobby lobby. i bought all the primary colors of legos. i cut the paper right in half and it made two invitations. i purchased small round foam adhesives - stickydoos. i also purchased a 3/4 in. hole puncher. i used the legothick font to write all the information inside the invitation. i used the legothick font. you can download it here.
i made the invitation look like a lego brick with 8 dots. i used the hole puncher for the dots and used the round adhesives to give the invitation a little bit of dimension. they were very simple and easy to do.
we purchased the birthday package at the lego store. i am not sure that i would do this again. i'm just going to lay out all the information so you can decide if you'd want to do this. you can purchase the birthday package and schedule an in-store party for $125. this would have been fun but they were booked up for the date i wanted. i purchased the "take home" birthday package for $115. it included invitations (which i didn't need and you wouldn't either if you did the take home package because the invitations were for an in-store party), thank you notes, lego nametags, a birthday lego brick for the birthday boys, goodies bags included coupons, a lego magazine and a card with lego building tips. the package also includes a $100 gift card for you to spend in the store to buy things for the party goers to put together at the party. so basically $100 of my $115 was to purchase things in the store. in hindsight, i don't know if that was worth it, but we did it.
it was a little difficult for us to purchase for all the party goers because we had a wide range of kids coming - 13 years old to 1 year old. i decided for the older kids we would purchase a lego key chain for them. i also purchased some lego candy (like sweet tarts) from a candy store and tied the key chain to the candy bag. for the my son, one boy cousin, and my son's one friend he invited we purchased bionicles. for the some of the younger ones, we purchased a lego cup which we filled with large legos from their lego wall.
i also purchased a lego ice tray. i spent almost a week making lego ice for the party. i also made lego candy. i had a lady at homeland make a lego brick cake. i just took a picture in and showed her what i wanted. she did a great job. we also used my son's legos to build his name. i had that in front of the cake. everything was in the green, red, blue and yellow colors.
i purchased the plain square primary color plates from wal-mart. i was going to buy confetti but decided to use legos to decorate the table. i just had a couple of my son's favorite snacks, doritos and cheese chex mix. i used the legothick font and the logo from several sacks to make the poster.
i filled a jar with legos and let people guess how many legos were in the jar. since my son had just finished selling his cub scout popcorn, a tin of cub scout popcorn was the prize for the correct guess. his friend won the prize.
the officer's mom let us borrow a lego table. while the older kids played with smaller legos in my son's room, the younger kids could play with larger legos at the lego table.
overall it was a great party. it was nice enough for the kids to play outside. i think the kids were all happy with their favors. it was nice to be able to have a small party with the family at our house. now i have to get to work on my daughter's korean party coming up.
