renewing your driver's license

on thursday i had my day all planned out.

oh wait, i forgot to say - wednesday when i went to the bank, the kind teller informed me my driver's license had expired last month. great.

i had planned to go out of town to visit a friend for the day. i guess i was going to be doing an errand before i headed out of town now. the officer was not too keen on me driving without a valid license or coming to pick me up if i got stopped by the police.
the officer said he was pretty sure i had to have a birth certificate to renew. i thought, "surely not - it's not even been 30 days. don't i have a grace period like they do when you renew your tag?" the officer didn't think so, so now i have to plan a trip to the bank.

so here's the plan thursday morning:

  • call the tag agency to see what i actually need to renew license.
  • possibly go by bank to get my naturalization papers (don't actually have a birth certificate).
  • go by tag agency to renew license.
  • grab a quick breakfast and be on my way by 10 a.m.
here's what actually happened (and i realize it's really not bad in the grand scheme of things!):
  • realize tag agency doesn't open until 9 a.m. so can't call until then.
  • call tag agency at 9 a.m. "what do i actually need to renew license?" i asked. "you need a birth certificate." kind lady replied. "don't actually have a birth certificate, will my naturalization paper do?" i ask. she says, "i don't know you will have to call the department of public safety." she gives the the phone number and i call dps. they inform me the naturalization papers will suffice.
  • i leave at 9:15 a.m. to go to the bank to get my naturalization papers.
  • i arrive at 9:30 a.m. to the tag agency. yea - it look like there is no customers inside so i think i can get in and out quickly. however, i go inside and the kind lady i talked to this morning informs me - "oh we can't take those papers right now. first you have to go to dps. they will take the papers then, take your picture and your fingerprints. then you come back here and we will do the same thing." even though no one mentioned that this morning, i am going with the flow. kind lady tells me where dps is and i'm on my way.
  • i get to dps by 9:45 a.m. there are a few people in here. i pull my number and it's #1. they are on #90. okay - this is do-able. once it's gets to 99 it rolls over to #00 and then #1. i know i am now not going leave town at 10 a.m. though. i sit there with 9 other people for an hour and 15 minutes. each person is called up and there are several minutes that lapse between the time the person leaves the building and they call the next person up. there are only two older gentlemen working. at 11:15 a.m., they call my number, i am in and out pretty quickly. i am just thankful i didn't have my kids with me. they would have been very bored.
  • at 11:20 a.m., i am heading back to the tag agency. there are people there now. however, they have all been helped already. they did the same thing. they looked at my papers, took my pictures and took my fingerprints. i was in and out 10 minutes.
  • i'm grab some quick lunch and head out of the city, calling my friend at 12 p.m. to let her know i am just now leaving the city. i had called her after dps and said i would be there as soon as i could.

moral of this story - don't let your license expire friends!!! it's a much longer process if you do!

my son and daughter's request

my kids have been at their grandparents for the last two nights. it's been nice because the officer and i have been able to spend some time together. the officer's parents have a great place a little out in the country. they have some land and a great little fishing pond. my kids LOVE to fish out there with grandma & grandpa.

we were at the movie rental place last night and we got a phone call. it was grandma saying our son wanted to talk to us.

hmm.....

i hope everything is going okay.

my son gets on the phone with the officer.

"dad? can we have a pet worm?" my son asked.

"well..... we'll have to see what we can do." the officer replied.

i get on the phone with my daughter and let her know i found dora: pirate adventure at family video (they have a lot of kid's videos that are free - you don't even have to rent anything to get the kid video). she's very excited about the video because they have been wanting to watch it for a long time, but it's always been gone. however, she gets back on task.

"mommy? can i have a pet worm" she asks.

i think they have both decided to take one parent and see what each will say.

oh yeah - an earthworm!

the officer is picking them up today so i say, "i will leave it up to daddy."

my daughter says, "can i talk to daddy please?"

"daddy? can i have a pet worm? (a lot of giggles) it's crawling ALL over me!"

the officer won't be able to resist. he tells them they can have one but we will have to let it go into the flower bed in a few days.

**update** there is now a blue plastic bowl (the bowl they came in because they were to bait but saved by my children) in my refrigerator with worms in it. i don't even know if they are alive because i haven't looked in there. my kids have not said anything about them. how long do i have to keep them in there???

bucket, bucket, who's got the bucket?

yesterday was so nice outside wasn't it. not too hot. just perfect for playing with water for just a little bit. after the officer cleaned his work motorcycle, we let the kids play with the water hose. nothing entertains them more. we can always count on a good couple of hours of fun. here's some pictures of their fun.

can't believe she still fits in it

good & plenty & whirly pops

the officer went to the cracker barrel for breakfast this morning. he brought a little surprise home for all of us. he laid them out on the table on a piece of paper with our names on it. the officer brought me some good & plentys. have you eaten those before? they are the black licorice inside. i don't like them, but it's totally the thought that counts. he's so sweet. the officer bought each of the kids one of those big swirl suckers (it says whirly pop on it).

i would have a nice, cute picture of my daughter with her whirly pop but she broke it before i got it out of the wrapper. she was content with eating the little pieces. it was not long before my son wanted his broken up so he could eat little pieces too.

however, leave it to my son to do his own thing. i giggled and had to take the picture fast to show you this. he was eating his whirly pop with a wipe (we still have wipes around because they are great for cleaning up small messes). he does not like to be sticky.

a hard look at a "day after thanksgiving day" shopper

this is for you j. b.!

This is a long one, so do not get into it unless you want a hard look of what it is like to be a 4 a.m. after Thanksgiving day shopper. So here is an inside look of what it like to be 'one of those' shoppers who gets up at 4 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving to go shopping.

Obviously, it starts before the actual shopping day. I had a phone call from one of my sisters about a week and a half ago asking me if I was going to go shopping. of course I am. I have gone shopping for the last 5 years. I am also pleasantly surprised my other sister wants to go shopping. She does not usually partake in this tradition.

I must note here the first time I went shopping so many years ago, I arrived early at my mom's house to go shopping with two of my sisters. One sister did not show and the other had a sick child and could not go. My step-dad said he would go. I am not a morning person so I literally just throw on running pants, a t-shirt, and a sweatshirt. I put on deodorant, brush my teeth, put my hair in a ponytail and I am out the door in 10 minutes. When I arrive at my mom's house, down comes my step-dad from the his room upstairs. I look like I got out of the house in 10 minutes, but he has on a blazer, long sleeve button down shirt, pressed khaki pants, and brown loafers. I did not know if we were fixing to fight 20 people for the last Elmo toy or go to church. He was a trooper though, he hung with me the entire time. He even entered JC Penney's twice to get the free ornament they were handing out.

Anyhow, back to 2007. I anxiously wait for the ads on Thanksgiving morning. I look through every one of them, even the Ace Hardware one - even though I know I will not be purchasing anything from there. What if they have a screwdriver that was previously priced $2.50 and now it is on sale for $1.75? I find the ones I know I will purchase something from - Toys-R-Us, Target, & Wal-Mart. From all the previous years of shopping, I know that Bath & Body Works will be having their wallflowers on sale for $5, so there will definitely be a trip there. I go to my mother's on Thanksgiving day and my sister and I quickly plot our strategy. We go through every ad looking at the items we will want to buy, checking out the time they open and how long which particular store will be having their 'early bird specials'. We make a list of where we need to go and what we are planning on looking for.

My sister casually mentions, we could use her husband's handy dandy walkie talkies. This intrigues me. We will be able to stay in touch with each other in the store with the added element of not having to dial a number to reach each other and having a little bit of high tech gear with us. This is probably where we have crossed a line between the casual "I wonder what they have for sale" people to the ones who the "I wonder what they have sale" people look at with a crazy look of "what kind of freaky shoppers are they?" Does not matter, we make up code names for each other. We thought of the most ridiculous code names we could - i.e. drug lord, brainwasher, poopwiper, & gassy man - I said they were ridiculous.

We decide I will pick up my sister at 4:30 a.m. to make it to Toys-R-Us at 5 a.m. I clip all my coupons, finalize all my lists, gather all the ads, put my shoes and jacket by the door, charge my phone, change my purse to a backpack purse (a backpack purse so I can have 2 free hands for shopping bags and it will be harder to mug me - see always thinking!) and put a water in my purse in case of dehydration! I am ready to go to bed. I set my alarm for 3:50 a.m. I went to bed at 12 a.m. I tell myself I am just going to be taking a little nap then I will get up and start my shopping. I just wear to bed what I plan on wearing the next morning. One of my sisters says she is going to 'look cute' to go shopping. Good luck to her, she is young so she can do this with much less effort than I can.

I wake up with the alarm. I got everything ready the night before (or 4 hours ago) so I am out of the house in 5 minutes. I go to 7-11 and buy a cappuccino & chips (great breakfast, but what else is open at 4 a.m. in the freakin' morning) and a hot chocolate & powdered donut for my sister. I pick her up at 4:25 a.m. She is ready to go too and has the walkie talkies charged up and ready to go.

We head to Toys-R-Us. It is very cold outside - below freezing. Toys-R-Us is in a shopping center with 6 other big store fronts. The line to get in is down at least 4 store fronts that I can see. We decide to wait in the heated, warm car and not get in line. We will just wait until the doors open and all the people go in and then we will. We do a final check on the walkie talkies - good to go. We head out of the car toward the doors. We wait like 5 minutes and the line is still down 4 store fronts. We decide to just walk in with the people in line (yeah, I know it is not right). A couple of people make comments but there are so many people doing it now it makes no difference. It is completely packed. The employees are only letting people go one way in the store, so we are herded like cattle around the store. My sister and I make a plan to each look for particular toys. After we find some of the toys that are actually left, we contact each other, via walkie talkie using our code names. I heard some people say, "oh my goodness, that's what we need!" and some people just looked at me like - I can't believe she is that into the after Thanksgiving day shopping. I just think - whatever you are out here at 5 a.m. battling these people for a freaky Bratz doll with their FREAKY big eyes.

Anyway, the walkie talkies are actually great. We are able to say, "Hey go ahead and get in line and I'll met up with you." They worked great all day for someone waiting in line and someone doing the shopping - cuts the shopping time down to half - so it is something to think about. We do find some great deals at Toys-R-Us and now it is onto Target. It is the same process with Target, wait in the car till the doors open then bum rush it 5 minutes later, ignoring all the comments. Split up, find the great deals, and meet up again at certain sections. This is also where we meet up with my step-dad and other sister. They do not purchase anything - which I find a bit odd because it is Target, but hey to each his own. I find some great deals here, one of which is a digital ornament which can hold up to 50 pictures for $20. I have already loaded some pictures onto it and although the screen is small the picture quality is great. I am thinking about buying another one for myself and loading pictures from the last year on it - great way to document the last year. Anyway, we check out and my step-dad and sister decide to go to different stores so we bid them farewell.

We head to the local mall. My first stop is Bath & Body Works. I am right there are $5 wallflowers. I have already prepared my coupons the night before for this store. I will spare you all the gory details of my venture into this store. I had to wait in line a long time and my sister had time to go to 2 other stores while I was actually being checked out - their computers messed up. Again, walkie talkies were great.

We met up again with my step-dad and sister. We head to the Disney store where we find more deals. After the Disney store, my step-dad treats us all to Chic-Fil-A breakfast. He wanted to go to Starbucks but we needed more substantial food to keep us going. By the way, this is my first time to eat breakfast at Chic-Fil-A, but I know it is going to be great because their chicken great! They do not disappoint, their chicken biscuit is awesome. Hits the spot and we are ready to go again. My step-dad and sister leave us again to head to some different stores.

My sister and I head to Old Navy, which we found some great deals at, and then to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is out of the MP3 player I want, but I purchase the rest of the gifts I wanted to buy. We have to go back home to take showers and go to another family Thanksgiving lunch, otherwise we may have shopped longer.I am sure some of you will NEVER do this. I am sure some of you wish you could have. I am sure some of you did do this - did you have walkie talkies???

In the end, I was very glad to be able to spend the time with my sister, it was a lot of fun. She brought the new element of walkie talkies into the equation. I want my own personal walkie talkies now and I see a whole new world opening up to me - husband in the garage, me in the kitchen (not cutting up raw meat) contacting him on the walkie talkie asking him to cut up the steak for pepper steak and I do not even have to leave the kitchen. I enjoyed having breakfast with my step-dad (who has always offered to shop with me if no one else will and has meant it) and my sister (who even though I am pretty sure I am always her alarm clock when I call her cell phone to see where she is on this particular shopping day still showed up looking CUTE!). Great deals on presents for the family and those $5 Wallflowers that will get me to the spring until the semi-annual sale comes in June (more details about that late).

**UPDATE**: 10-13-2008 i got my own set of walkie talkies from my sister for my birthday. she may not be able to go shopping this year because she is going to try to get it all done during fall break. i may just have to take the walkie talkies and talk to myself.

flip-flop palooza

my friend, k, told me about a $1 flip flop sale at old navy. it started today at 9 a.m. i made plans a couple of days ago to go to it. we have swim lessons on saturday morning so i had to make sure i could fit it in the morning.

our plan of attack:

  • wake up and eat breakfast by 7:30 a.m. done.
  • shower and get the kids dressed in their swimsuits by 8:15 a.m. done.
  • get out of the door with the movies i have to return, the checks i have to take to the bank and the poster's i'm going to laminate at mardels by 8:30 a.m. done.
  • go to redbox and return the movies by 8:40 a.m. done. (i love redbox - don't you?)
  • go to bank - oops they don't open until 9 a.m. this will have to wait until after old navy.
  • get to old navy by 9 a.m., since we don't do the bank errand we are old navy by 8:50 a.m. done.

hmmm... there seem to be people in line at old navy. i guess we'd better get out of the car instead of wait in it until 9 a.m.

there are already - and i'm not exaggerating - about 200 people in line already.

a worker is coming out to tell us we can only get 5 pairs of solid flip flops for a $1 each. she emphasizes "no running or pushing!"

alrighty.....

"kids, hold on to mommy's shirt and don't let go!"

they open the doors at 9 a.m. and it's not so bad going in. we went straight to the kids section and got each of my kids 2 pairs of flip flops. we get a friend of mine a pair and then head to the check out line. i had to wait about 10 minutes in line but it wasn't too bad either. we are in and out in 20 minutes. i saw my cousin, j, driving in as we left. she said it took her 45 minutes.

we head to the bank, which is now open. after the bank we head to swim lessons. my son swam for the first time by himself. they said he is ready to move up to beginners II. the kids take showers and change clothes. we head to mardels to buy some birthday presents for my nieces and laminate some posters.

oh yeah, on may 30th, mardels will be having their home education curriculum 20% off. all alpha omega products only 15% off.

now we are home, have eaten lunch, and are in rest-time. and now i am going to take advantage of this rest-time and take a little nap.

happy memorial day friends.

oh, my daughter just came in here and told me she had a dream last night about some angry eyebrows. what does that even mean?

peanut butter & hershey kiss cookies

earlier in the week i decided to make cookies with the kids. i had seen a picture in the sunday paper of the cookies. i'm sure you've seen or eaten them. they are peanut butter cookies with the hershey kisses on top. last night my daughter and i went to wal-mart to buy the ingredients we didn't have. i was going to have the kids help me make them so we could reiterate the 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup concept.

as i have said before, i am not the greatest cook. whenever i try something new or something i haven't done a while, something inevitably goes wrong.

i had all the ingredients on the table with all the measuring cups and spoons ready to go. we start off good - mixing the butter & sugars. next comes the vanilla & eggs. i know now i should have mixed the dry ingredients in a separate bowl, but i just added them into the "wet" bowl. i added the baking soda & salt and then comes the flour. we had to add 2 1/2 cups of flour in the dough. my son even made a number chart to mark off the number of 1/4 cups we were putting in at a time.

i was stirring the dough and i looked at the chart. okay one more cup to go. however, i thought the dough will be very hard to stir with another whole cup in it. i looked at the 1/4 cup measuring cup we were using and noticed it was not a 1/4 cup we were using it was the 1/2 cup. oh no. we are already 1 cup over what the recipe calls for. i quickly called my friend, k, and she set me at ease. i had messed up but with particular recipe she thought it would be okay.
the recipe said to add the hershey kisses before cooking. however, when i did, the tops of the kisses burned. k told me to wait until they are done and then add the kisses. this worked perfectly.

the cookies with the kisses burned on top

the final cookies - and the look and tasted pretty yummy
now the real test will be when the officer comes home and tastes the cookies. of course i will not tell him what happened while we make them before he tastes them until after he eats them. i guess even for someone like me peanut butter cookies rolled in sugar with a hershey kiss on top is hard to get wrong.
have you had any cooking disasters???

now i lay me down to sleep

when my kids go to bed, we let them have books to read/look at before they go to sleep. i went into my daughter's room to turn out her lamp. this is how i found her, asleep with her pile of books and her puppy (which has been missing the last 3 days - we are very glad pink puppy has found the way back to her rightful spot).

how cute & peaceful

camping overnight - and not in the backyard this time

since i had to work two days this week, the officer decided to take the kids camping. of course, they had done the backyard camping thing a couple of months ago. it went pretty good, so the officer decided to try a campground this time.

the officer decided to go to a koa campsite he knew was clean and had a playground & swimming pool. monday we did all the essential food shopping (hotdogs, smores, bacon & pancake mix) and packed all the gear.

they headed out there tuesday around lunchtime. it was kind of hot. they got to do a lot of hiking and walking around on nature trails. they started their campfire for dinner but it was kind of too hot for a campfire. plus, the firewood must have been a little wet because the officer said it smoked quite a bit.

there was a stray cat that made it's way around to the campsite. my daughter named it "campy" because they found it when they were camping. they fed campy their hot wings (apparently left over from lunch) and she ate it bones & all. campy stayed around the whole time they were there - probably because they kept feeding it. my son found a little black lizard he named "mr. lizard" (original huh?). he tried to catch him, but mr. lizard was too fast. that's okay because i didn't really want a pet lizard.

the kids had fun "trying" to chop some tree limbs for fire - and if i was telling you this in person i would use air-quotes. they had fun. however, even though the limb was not more than 1 inch in diameter the limb was never completely chopped off.

the officer put the kids to bed around 8:30 p.m. they went right to sleep. however, the officer did not sleep as well. they were close to the highway and the sound of the cars all night long kept the officer awake. in addition, the officer's air mattress had a slow leak. when the officer woke up at 4:30 a.m. it wasn't long before he decided to pack it up. they were home before 6 a.m.

she cracks me up sometimes

today in school my son was reading the Bible story about david and goliath.

after he read the story, he asked his sister a question.

"sis, what would you do if a 9 ft. giant was coming to fight you?"

she replied, "I WOULD PEE MY PANTS!"

short - to the point.

i don't know - it made me giggle. thought you might want a smile for today too.
____________________________________________________

i wrote the first portion of this post earlier in the day. i decided to add this last portion after dinner.

while the officer & my son were at tae kwon do, i stayed home to make dinner. my daughter was keeping herself entertained.

i was making ice tea when she asked me for a cube of ice. i gave it to her. she then asked if she could have a towel. i let her know where she could get one. i assumed she wanted to wipe up the drippings from the ice. she got the towel and piece of ice and sat at the kitchen table.

as she sat at the table, she put the ice cube in the towel. again, i assumed it was to keep the ice from dripping everywhere as it melted. she rubbed and rubbed the piece of ice with the towel.

then with an exasperated voice she said, "I CAN'T GET THIS PIECE OF ICE TO DRY OFF! I keep wiping and wiping it and it won't dry off mommy!"

i don't make these things up friends.

...and before you decide that you would never homeschool your kids because "look at the kind of education those kids are getting. her daughter doesn't even know you can't dry off ice". i want you to know we have played a lot with water this week and we have discussed ice and how it freezes and melts in the science portion of school. i guess she didn't get it. oh well....

shepherding a child's heart - foundation 7

it's that time again and this one is long. again this is all from sheperding a child's heart by tedd tripp. i am basically copying my sunday school teacher's notes and excerpts from the book verbatim. scriptures will be in yellow and my thoughts and comments will be in green. there's a lot to cover so this will broken down into two parts. this is the first part: communication. the second part will be about the rod. my sunday school teacher thinks there is a little danger in this book because of the order in which he teaches the two biblical methods: communication and then the rod. the rod typically comes first when raising children and then communication. he is not sure why communication is discussed first.

foundation #7: embracing biblical methods: communication: part 1

a biblical approach to children involves two elements that you weave together. one element is rich, full communication. the other is the rod. in the book of proverbs we find these two methods side by side.

Proverbs 23:13-19
Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death. My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad; my inmost being will rejoice when you lips speak what is right. Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.

Proverbs 23:22
Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Proverbs 23:26
My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways....

Proverbs 18:2, 13 (parents are guilty of both of these)
A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.
He who answers before listening that is his folly and his shame.

Proverbs 4:23
Above all else, guard you heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

the finest art of communication is not learning how to express your thoughts. it is learning how to draw out the thoughts of another. your objective in communication must be to understand your child, not simply to have your child understand you. many parents never learn these skills. they never discover how to help their children articulate their thoughts and feelings. this is hard for me to do. i know i often am trying to get my point across. i am trying to get my kids to understand what i'm try say. sometimes i just expect obedience without any input from them, and sometimes i should get that but perhaps that should not be the norm.

when a misbehavior or disobedience occurs, what is important in the correction process is not venting your anger, frustration, or feelings, rather, it is understanding the nature of the struggle that your child is having. you need to understand not just what has happened, but what is going on within your child. remember, it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. your questions in correction is this:

what is the content of the abundance of the heart in this circumstance?
what is the temptation?
what was his response to his temptation?
what was he trying to accomplish?

you must get beneath the behavior and understand the child's motivation in the situation.

Matthew 15:18-19
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean'.For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

Proverbs 20:5
The purposes of a man's heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.

rather than "why did you....?" ask some of the following questions:

what were you feeling when you hit your sister?
what did your sister do to make you mad?
help me understand how hitting her seemed to make things better.
what was the problem with what she was doing to you? (perhaps he was sinned against. let him tell you about it.)
in what other ways could you have responded?
how do you think your response reflected trust or lack of trust in God's ability to care for and protect you?

as your child answers these questions, you role is to help him understand himself and speak with clarity and honesty about his internal struggles with sin.

there are four issues you must walk him through:

1. the nature of temptation
2. the possible responses to this temptation
3. the motives for those responses
4. the sinful response he chose

in this process you stand both above him and beside him. you are above him because God has called you to a role of discipline and correction. you are beside him because you, too, are a sinner who struggles with anger toward others. oh i love this!

parents tend to do one or the other. some stand in such solidarity with the child in his failure (asking, "How can i correct him when i do the same things?) that they fail to correct. other stand so much above that they are hypocritically distanced from their children. you must remember that you engage your children in this manner as God's agent. you, therefore, have the right and obligation to censure evil. you do so as a sinner who is beside them and able to understand the way sin works in the human heart.

foundation #7: embracing biblical methods: communication: part 2 - types of communication

we often reduce parenting to these three elements:

1) rules
2) correction
3) discipline/punishment

you give your children the rules. the correction phase comes into play when they break the rules. in the punishment phase you announce the consequence they will receive for breaking the rules. i stop here so many times. during the process of teaching my child - i stop here too many times. it may be because of time, laziness, or ignorance (although i can't claim that anymore). this may result in children who obey but what does their heart look like?

this part of the the book discusses the rich dimension of communication that must lie beneath and support all you say in providing rules. it should look like this:

1) rules
2) correction
3) discipline/punishment
________________
4) encouragement

5) correction
6) rebuke
7) entreaty
8) instruction
9) warning
10) teaching
11) prayer

paul in 1 thessalonians tell us differing conditions in the hearer require differing forms of speaking.

1 Thessalonians 5:14
Warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

you do great harm when you fail to discern what type of communication is appropriate to the moment.

1. rules - "don't play in the street." you state the expectation.

2. correction strong's - "straighten out"

webster 1828 - to bring back or attempt to bring back to propriety in morals; to punish for faults or deviation from moral rectitude; to chastise; to discipline; as, a child should be corrected for lying.

sometimes a child needs to be brought into conformity with a standard. correction remedies something wrong. correction helps your children to understand God's standard and teaches them to assess their behavior against that standard. not my standard, which is so much lower than God's, but God's standard.

Proverbs 3:11, 12
My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord, neither be weary of his correction. For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Proverbs 15:10
Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way; and he that hateth reproof shall die.

Proverbs 22:15
Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Proverbs 23:13
Withhold not correction from the child; for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

Proverbs 29:17
Correct they son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

when a child breaks the rule, you correct their behavior - restate the rule, clarify the rule, explain the rule, if there were natural consequences discuss them, etc.

3. punishment - strongs - to inflict with a penalty

webster's 1828 - to pain, to afflict with pain, loss or calamity for a crime or fault; primarily, to afflict with bodily pain, as to punish a thief with pillory or stripes; but the word is applied also the affliction by loss of property, by transportation, banishment, seclusion from society. the laws require murderers to be punished with death. other offenders are to be punished with fines, imprisonment, and hard labor. God punishes men for their sins with calamities personal and national.

Proverbs 22:11
When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise; and when the wise is instructed, he received knowledge.

4. encouragement - to comfort

webster's 1828 - to give courage to; to give or increase confidences of success; to inspire with courage, spirit, or strength of mind, to embolden; to animate; to incite to inspirit.

children need communication designed to inspire and fill with hope and courage. your children know the pain of failure. they like you find things looking hopeless at times. you can help them assess the reasons for disappointment. you need to help them understand the promises of God. you can encourage them to find courage, hope and inspiration from God, who draws near the brokenhearted and contrite. this is probably the one that i need to work on the most. it's the hardest for me to do naturally.

1 Thessalonians 5:14
And we urge you, brother, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.

5. rebuke - strong's - to forbid

webster's 1828 - a direct and pointed correction aimed at the face.

Luke 4:35
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

Luke 8:24
And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and there was a calm.

to rebuke is to say, "Stop that!"

a rebuke censures behavior. sometimes a child must experience your sense of alarm, shock, and dismay at what he has done or said.

6. entreaty - Strong’s – petition or supplication

Webster’s 1828 – an earnest petition or request

Proverbs 23:26
My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

Proverbs 5-7 is a lengthy entreaty to avoid sexual immorality

this is communication that is earnest and intense. it involves pleading, soliciting, urging, and even begging. it is not, however, the begging of a beggar. it is rather the earnest pleading of a father or mother who, understand his child, the ways of God, and the extremity of the moment, is willing to bare his soul in earnest pleading for his child to act in wisdom and faith. it is a special kind of communication that is reserved for use in cases of great import.

7. instruction - strong’s - tutorage, i.e. education or training; by implication, disciplinary correction: — chastening, chastisement, instruction, nurture.

Webster’s 1828 - to build into[structure – to build; in – into: destruct, construct, obstruct] to teach; to inform the mind; to educate; to impart knowledge to one who was destitute of it. the first duty of parents is to instruct their children in the principles of religion and morality.

Proverbs 1:8
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.

Proverbs 4:1
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

Proverbs4:13
Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

Proverbs 5:12, 13
And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; And have not beyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

Proverbs 5:23
He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

II Timothy 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

instruction is the process of providing a lesson, a precept, or information that will help your children to understand their world. as a parent you are dealing with young people who have large gaps in their understanding of life. they need information about themselves and others. they need to understand the world of spiritual reality and the principles of the Kingdom of God.

8. warning - strong’s – to put in mind, i.e. (by implication) to caution or reprove gently: — admonish

Webster’s 1828- To give notice of approaching or probable danger or evil, that it may be avoided; to caution against any thing that may prove injurious.

Proverbs 6:32
He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself. (ESV)

1 Thessalonians 5:14
Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

Hebrews 11:7
By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

warnings put us on guard regarding a probable danger. a warning is merciful speech, for it is the equivalent of posting a sign informing motorist about a bridge that is out. a warning faithfully alerts us to danger while there is still time to escape unharmed. an alert parent can enable his child both to escape danger and learn in the process. warning preserves. a warning is simply a statement that A leads to B. i am not so sure all my warnings are "statement". it is acquainting them with the sowing-and-reaping principle found throughout scriptures.

9. teaching - strong's - to make have knowledge, wisdom, or understanding; to guide wittingly.

webster's - to instruct; to inform; to communicate to another the knowledge of that of which he was before ignorant.

Isaiah 2:3
And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will each us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

Luke 11:1
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

teaching sometimes takes place before it is needed. it is often most powerfully done after a failure or problem. drawing upon knowledge of scripture, you may teach your child to understand himself, others, life, God's revelation, and the world. you must actively impart knowledge to your children.

10. prayer

Prayer is communication with God, not your child, but your children need to hear you pray and you need to hear them pray. We should not pray so that our children will hear us, but when they hear us pray they will hear our faith in God.

1 Peter 3:12
For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

while prayer is not communication with the child but with God, it is nevertheless an essential element of communication between the parent and the child. our most penetrating insights into our children will often come as they pray. understanding what they pray and how they pray is often a window into their soul.

see mommy.....

**update** for the past two days (today is sunday) my son has put a newer and bigger piece of grass in his sister's cup so she will keep thinking it's growing. don't know how long this will last. he started his own - in the same kind of container and everything - but she know's it's fake. she knows he put his in there and that nothing grew. hmm.....

well most of our smallish collection has died.

the two plants we received in the kid's meal at braums bit the dust. i don't think it had anything to do with me. i just think they ran their course. the small tree limb in the blue cup was thrown away just days later due to dead leaves. i just threw the little bean plant my son had gotten in sunday school away last week. it had started to die too. it lasted 2 months. that's pretty good on treasure's island.

my daughter's grasshead is still kicking. it has survived several "hair" cuts. i've worked very hard at keeping that thing watered.

my daughter came in the other day and said she wanted to plant something. she had an old dentyne gum holder. i asked her if she wanted a bean or something plant.

"no, i'm just going to plant something." she replied.

"honey, you know nothing will actually grow in there if you don't have a seed of some kind."

"yes, it will mommy you just wait and see."

"honey, seriously mommy doesn't know a lot about plants but nothing will grow if you don't put some kind of seed in the dirt."

"yes, it will mommy. i'm going to plant it."

so later in the day on the window sill, i saw her dentyne container complete with sand and filled with water. she had watered it several times. although it would take several days for the water she's putting in there to evaporate.

hmm.... okay - i'll just let it sit there. not going to hurt anything.

my son knows about the whole plant thing. he heard his sister say she wanted to plant something and knows she's fairly certain something will grow.

guess what he did.

while my daughter was at gymnastics last night, he went outside and picked some grass to put into her "plant" so she would think something would grow. he's not doing it to be mean, but he knows his sister expects something to grow, hopes something will grow, and he didn't want her to be disappointed. he has made mommy and daddy promise not to tell her that he did it. yeah i realize if she's ever going to have real plants when she grows up i'll have to tell her what happened, but for now i'm going to let brother be sweet to her.

sure enough, when we came back from gymnastics, she saw her "plant"!

she excitedly called me over to say, "see mommy i told you something would grow. i didn't even put a seed in there!!!!!!!"

don't you just love it when.......

1) the first thing your daughter says to you in the morning (at 6 a.m.) is: "how do your eyeballs stay in your eyes?

2) you open your freezer and your son has put his han solo action figure in cup to freeze him like they do in the empire strikes back?

3) your kids go through a whole box of band-aids in a 3 days?

4) you find more toys in your purse than items that actually belong to you?

5) you see sandy footprints leading from the back door to the kid's bedroom on the carpet you just vacuumed?

6) you roll over in bed and find a child asleep right - and i mean right - beside you?

7) when your kids have dragged out every single toy out of their bedroom during "rest-time"?

8) when your daughter uses a whole bottle of your bath & body works body wash just to make bubbles? (if that didn't just make you shudder, i don't know what will).

9) when your daughter changes her clothes no less than 6 times a day (literally)? no wonder i have so much laundry.

10) you just sit down to write this post and one of your kids yells "mama" when they are in the bathroom, or needs help putting a dress on a polly pocket, or wants you to look at their awesome robot they just built with toys and duct tape?

don't you just love it when.......

1) grandma is sick and your kids decide to make a "get well" picture to send to her without you even asking them too?

2) your daughter gives you her one of her special yo-yos so everyone can have one?

3) you son write "i heart mom" on your bathroom mirror? we leave a dry erase marker by the mirror so the officer and i can write notes back and forth to each other and the kids have picked it up.

4) you hear your older child reading a book to your younger child?

5) your son opens the door for you and your daughter and know you some of the manners you have been tirelessly teaching have stuck?

6) your children say "thank you for making dinner"?

7) your son appreciates bath & body works too - meaning he loves good smelling stuff?

8) your daughter randomly gives you a kiss and tells you she loves you?

9) your kids still grab for your hand to hold (this is one of the things i will miss most when they stop)?

10) your kids have that very honest time - when they first wake up or right before they go to sleep - and you can lay there and talk to them about all different kinds of stuff? they are unguarded, not trying to impress anyone, do not get easily embarrassed, and just want to talk to you about different/random things. you can get know your child a lot during this time.

i know when the first 10 things happen i don't always appreciate them for what they are - just those wonderful things that happen when you have kids. things you would miss if they didn't happen. things that make your life a little more exciting.

the last 10 things are things that make the first 10 all worth it. well - it's ALL worth it, but you know what i mean. you can take the first 10 all week long when you get one of the last 10 in the end.

i got this verse from my cousin, julie's blog and i loved it.

Psalms 127:3,4
Don't you see that children are God's best?
the fruit of the womb his generous legacy?
Like a warrior's fistful of arrows
are the children of a vigorous youth.
Oh, how blessed are you parents,
with your quivers full of children!

my mother's day present

i really, really like my cell phone. it's a nokia 3100. nokias are the only phones i've ever had. the officer has had several phone. he had the ever popular razor (back when they were popular) and hated it. i didn't like it either. i like mine.

my phone's old. it's battered and bruised but i love it. i think i've had it at least 3 years, possibly 4 - which makes it practically ancient in cell phone terms. it's not a flip-phone because flip phones just make me have to do one more thing with my hands to answer the phone.

several times my husband has asked me about getting a new phone, but i have resisted. my phone has a feature on it. i don't know if other phone's have this but none of the officer's phones have had it. it's a voice recorder. the officer's phones have had voice recorders but his phone wouldn't let the recordings be applied as a ring tone the phone.

every so often i change my ring tone. not to sweet home alabama or the latest, popular song. my last several ring tones have been my son quoting the pledge of allegiance or my daughter singing he's got the whole world in he hands (yes - i meant to say "in he hands" because that's how she sings it.). maybe it's annoying and pretentious for me to put my kids talking/singing as my ring tone, but oh well.

my phone has been trying to die on me for several month. i needed a new battery. charging does not always help. it turns off without me knowing and then i notice 3 missed calls from the officer. yikes! well for mother's day, the officer got me a new battery for my cell phone at batteries plus. YEAH!!! now i can continue to hear my personal ring tones.

the current ring tone is of my son imitating the star wars and darth vader theme songs. when you listen to it make sure you "pause" the playlist music at the bottom of my blog. i love how my son's voice cracks in the middle. can you hear it?

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all you mothers out there!

ladybug release at the crystal bridge

** yeah there are a LOT of photos in this post!!!**

we went to the crystal bridge/myriad gardens yesterday. i have never taken the kids there. they were doing a ladybug release in the crystal bridge. they do it every year to help with the insects. my mother, sister-in-law & two nephews went with us. it cost $6 for adults & $4 for children 4-12. i printed of a $1 off coupon for everyone.

it started at 9:30 a.m., but we got there to get in line at 9 a.m. ladybugs were only being handed out as long as supplies lasted. i wanted to make sure my kids & nephews would get some ladybugs. i'm glad we got there early because there were a lot of schools/daycares that came arrived and it got pretty crowded. we finished just in time.

as soon as you get inside they give you a little plastic cup with about 20-30 ladybugs in it. we were told to not release them on the sidewalk or the water. my son decided he wanted to release his ladybugs on the top level. we walked through the crystal bridge (it's so pretty - they even have a coconut tree in there!) and up, up, up the steps until my son found the perfect spot to release his ladybugs.

my son was a little skittish at first, he's not a huge insect fan. however, he was very concerned when they fell on the sidewalk (because he's my "rules" boy and they said, "do not release them on the sidewalk!). we had to make sure they were all picked up and put back onto the plant. i think about half of his were "asleep".

my daughter found a beautiful red flower to release her ladybugs onto. she didn't mind the ladybugs on her as long as they weren't climbing up her arm. she didn't like that for some reason.

after we released our ladybugs, we went back to the entrance where they had a craft table set up. you could color pictures of ladybugs, make a ladybug with a paper plate or do a rubbing of insects.

we walked around the myriad gardens. my sister-in-law had some chex cereal she let the kids feed the ducks & goldfish - which were HUGE! the myriad gardens are really beautiful! we saw a really cute little turtle. after the kids took a picture of it, my mom touched it and we realized it was dead. i didn't tell the kids that.

after we were finished with the myriad gardens, we took the kids to the bass pro shop to see the huge fish tank they have. we also wanted to ride the trolley - kids ride free and the adults are only .25 cents (can't beat that!). the trolley ride goes through downtown and is about 30 minutes long. i told the kids this is the closest they'll be getting to a school bus.
we had a great time. although it was misty in the morning, around lunch time it had cleared up and was beautiful.
