내 딸 다섯 번째 생일 파티
(my daughter's 5th birthday party - in korean)

my daughter's 5th birthday party was this past saturday. if you didn't already know there was a korean theme. last year my daughter asked me if she could have a kimbob party. if you don't know what a kimbob is, it is a korean appetizer. it's vegetables and beef rolled in rice and wrapped in seaweed. she loves these. she can down 8 in about 3 minutes flat. i thought the idea was great.

i made kimbob invitations. i copied a picture of rice for the front of the invitation. on the inside i used igoogle to translate all the party information from english to korean. first i wrote it in korean and then right underneath it, i wrote it in english.
for decorations for her party, i heavily depended upon my mom. my mom had a ton of korean and asian stuff she let me use. it was a lot of fun going through all of the stuff with her. there were a lot of memories stored in those boxes. i saw the outfit my sister wore when my mother brought her home. my mother got out the hanbok (korean dresses) and shoes we had worn. you can see the shoes by the cupcakes in the pictures and the hanbok hanging on the right in the picture below.
my mother had figurines, chopsticks, cards, games, a podaegi (korean's version of the sling - of course their has been around much longer), fans, tea sets, and dishes. she let me use the dishes for the table.
there was a ton of food. as you may know i purchased some on my first trip to the asian market. my mother also made some fried rice. i bought most of the food from the korean restaurant. so we had rice crackers, cookies, fried rice, steamed white rice, beef bulgogi (marinated beef), kimbobs, chicken egg rolls (from sams), and kimchi. the korean restaurant also send along sides: bean sprouts, a different kimchi, potatoes, turnips, and something else that i had no idea what it was.
the sides
fried & white rice and bulgogi
the kimbobs & chicken egg rolls
the kimbob cupcakes (you can see the shoes to the right)
of course no party would be complete without mrs. courtney's famous cookies. she was so sweet to make some for the party. little rice bowls with chopsticks. aren't they cute????
the party favors were chinese take out boxes. they were filled with little plastic bowls, plates and soup spoons i got from the asian market, fortune cookies, funchops and chopsticks. i wrote their names in korean and english on their boxes.

in lieu of buying a cake, i decided to make kimbob cupcakes. they are just simple white cupcakes with white sprinkles and m&ms on them.
this is the first party where i let my daughter pick who she was going to invite. i had to ask her to tweak the guest list though. her first list consisted of her gymnastic teacher, her sunday school teacher, and another girl. we tweaked it because these were all adults. i asked her to make a list of girls who were her same age to invite. she invited three girls. they were all from church.
my mom has this great little table the girls sat at to eat. they all used their funchops with their chopsticks.
when they were done eating, we did some origami. i could be wrong but i think some of the mother's might have had more fun doing this.
the party was a success. the birthday girl and her friends had fun. there's NO way i could have done this without my mom and all her help. she took me shopping, bought party favors and food, let me borrow decorations, cooked food, and let me use her house for the party. thanks mom!!!! i love you!!!
