young chef's academy

we went to the young chef's academy today with our homeschool group for a field trip. it was a lot of fun. young chef's academy is in edmond. it was decorated very cutely and was kid friendly. there was only one "chef" working today, the other was out sick. we had 20 kids in our homeschool group, but the "chef" was great and very patient with all the kids.
as soon as they got started, she had all the kid wash their hands and put on little aprons. there were 3 steel tables set up in the area with the kitchen portion on one side on the room and the tables on the other. i sat my kids on the end so i could help if i needed too. the "chef" started everyone out measuring a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda into a bowl. she also did this with flour and salt. this was so the kids could get practice at measuring things. they were making poppy seed muffins. the "chef" went around the table and let each child do something. some poured eggs into a mixer, some poured poppy seeds in, some mixed the butter, and some measured out applesauce. the "chef" popped the muffins into the oven while they made their next thing. they made over 2 dozen mini muffins.
they also made a chicken salad. it consisted of chicken, brown rice, apples, green onions, red & yellow peppers and a vinaigrette dressing. as the "chef" told each step they were going to do, she also had trivia questions for the kids. it kept them interested. the kids got to cut up everything with kid-friendly pizza cutters. i bought my kids a couple to use at home. after everything was cut up and put into bowls, the "chef" mixed it all together and served everything up.
the kids enjoyed tasting what they made. after we were finished in the class, we went out into the waiting area and we got the pizza cutters and some pastry scrapers. it was really fun. they offer all types of classes. the officer said if they offer classes for adults i should take one. funny man.

How fun! My kids love helping me cook in the kitchen! I may need to get one of those cutters.
