Spring Break 2012

We headed to Carthage, Texas to visit Ma & Pa for our spring break. It is always so nice and relaxing there.

look at those TALL trees!

Just to emphasize we needed it I'll tell you about our departure. We were going to leave early, but we were pulling out of the garage, the officer noticed the Jeep across the street had been broken into. Nice. Someone had broken into the Jeep and put their speaker beside our house. Come to find out, the thieves did break into the Jeep but it wasn't the Jeep's speaker beside our house. Three hours later, the owner of the Jeep has arrived to go through his car and the police have come to pick up the speaker beside our house (which turned out to belong to our other neighbor that her car broken into). Crazy!

We finally get on the road. It is a little bit of a car ride but the kids do great in the car. It's easier now that they are older. We arrive at Ma & Pa's about 7:30 p.m. We visit for a bit and then head to the cabin to put the kids (and us) to bed.

Ma has a doctor's appointment at 10 a.m. about an hour away so we have to wake up early for breakfast. Of course, this is a no brainer because no one wants to miss out on Ma's homemade biscuits. :) We eat at 7 a.m. and then the kids and I take a morning walk with Ma & Sonny (their dog) at 8 a.m. Ma leaves b 9 a.m. to get her doctor's appointment. Pa and the officer go out on the boat to check Pa's fish finder.

The kids walk over to say hello to some horses nearby. They give them names like Little John and Blue.

The kids ask if they can walk by the pond. The officer tells them to change into shorts and off they go.

It wasn't long before they "slipped" and were wet from head to toe. Since they're wet, they might as well build a tunnel on the bank.

After showers, the kids try out their bb guns. My son has had his bb gun for a while, but the officer just got my daughter a bb gun on the way to Carthage. They were on the hunt wild hogs. Didn't catch any, but it was fun trying.

The afternoon is spent splitting wood, riding four wheelers, and checking hog traps. There might have been a nap or two taken in the gazebo. In the evening, we visited with more relatives.

The kids helped Ma make monkey bread for breakfast.

They also helped Ma make a birthday cake for the March birthdays at a local nursing home. My daughter successfully cracked 12 eggs with breaking any yolks. They also helped "paint" candy roses for the cake. They were rewarded later on in the evening with Ma's famous chocolate malts. They were good!

When the rain would let up a little, the officer and the kids would go check the hog traps (they caught four baby hogs) and the fish traps (they caught several catfish). Didn't even bother me (much) that the catfish were all chopped up on the counter top. :) After dinner, we went back to the cabin and the kids enjoyed a little Three Stooges with the officer. There were a lot of "Nyuk, Nyuk"s heard while the kids got ready for bed. See we waited until right before bed, so we don't have to hear it all day! :)

All the food was, of course, delicious. However, I have to show you a picture of one item of food we ate. Only Texas would have it.

Texas shaped tortilla chips.

Wednesday morning we ate breakfast with Pa. Ma had to go do physical therapy for her shoulder. Ma came home just in time to say good-bye to us. It is always so nice to go visit and get away from the city for a bit. Thanks Ma & Pa for always be so generous, kind and welcoming. Love you guys!
