my version of felt food

i am trying my hand at sewing. nothing fancy. i am making felt food. i was inspired by my friend, k. she made some felt food for her daughters for christmas. she said they loved it. i am positive my daughter (and my son) will love it too.

just to give you a little background - i don't sew. can't sew a straight line to save my life. i made an apron once in home economics in junior high. it turned out okay. however, in my house if something gets torn or if there is some minor mending to do, the kids ask first the officer and then their grandma to fix it. they don't come to me. the officer even has some sharp little scissors in got when he was in the national guard that i am not allowed to use. this is my attempt to show my children i can pick up a new hobby.

i went to hobby lobby and purchased two pieces of almost every color they had. i picked out matching embroidery thread. the kids loved helping me find the matching thread.

and that's about all you need to get started. it's a pretty cheap hobby to start. i had my own scissors, a needle (the officer's - it's sad i know. i will get my own sewing supplies), the felt, and the thread. i am ready. i googled images of "felt food" and found a ton of ideas. you can make it as simple or as complicated as you want. i opt for simple look.

i found a few things i wanted to to start with just to see if i could do it. i decided start with a .....

chocolate chip cookie. so how does it look? good enough to eat??? i used two pieces of felt for the cookie. cut several "chips" out of dark brown. i also used two pieces of felt inside to give the cookie a little shape. i used two pieces of embroidery thread and sewed around the outside. if i was thinking i would have used dark brown so it looked like the edges of the cookie were "browned". i was up late last night. it's become my new obsession. i decided my next thing to make would be a sandwich and a bag of chips. last night i made the ham, cheese, lettuce, one onion, pickle, and tomato. i'll post pictures once i'm finished with the whole sandwich and chips. hopefully my daughter likes it as much as i do. it's a lot of fun. i feel like i am being somewhat creative. we'll see how it goes.
